Trip #116 – Somerset Drain (Bridgewater Drain) – A Damp Squib, But Fishy Enough to Return
Another new venue today. A bit of research had pointed me towards the Bridgewater Drain system – somewhere I’d not fished before but had heard enough about to warrant a look. With temperatures still holding up reasonably well for the time of year, lures were the order of the day once again. My lure buying habit, if I’m honest, was starting to look less like a hobby and more like a full-blown addiction. It also gave me a chance to try out the new purchase…
The Setup
- Rod 1: Savage Gear Parabellum Spin 15-34g paired with a Shimano 4000FG – 50lb braid
- Rod 2: Shimano Yasei UH Pike 30-90g, paired with an Abu Garcia Max Pro Baitcaster – 50lb braid
Arriving at the venue, I was met with a bit of a surprise – the drain was partially flooded, which wasn’t something I’d anticipated or planned for. Not ideal, but I was there now, so I persevered and dug out a dark pattern lure to work through the coloured water.

Three hours and two small taps later, that was about the extent of the action. I called it a day, slightly deflated but not put off. The venue had that indefinable “fishy” look about it – the kind of water that just feels like it’s holding something, even when it isn’t playing ball on the day.
Definitely one to return to. Just a case of when, not if.
